Tucson City Golf’s fall overseed schedule is now set, outlining when each course will take its annual transition into winter playing conditions. Overseeding is an essential part of maintaining healthy ryegrass and preparing the courses for the cooler months ahead.

During overseed, each course will close briefly so our agronomy teams can transition the turf and set up the conditions you can count on all winter long. Here’s everything you need to plan your rounds before the transition begins. 

What You Need to Know

This year, Overseeding runs September 14 through October 23, with each course closing briefly during that window. You’ll still have places to play across Tucson City Golf while individual courses are closed. In the meantime, our agronomy teams are gearing up for their busiest (and greenest) time of year.

Why Overseeding Matters for Your Game

Overseeding is how we shift from summer bermudagrass to cool‑season ryegrass. This process gives you smoother fairways, cleaner lies, and consistent winter conditions. Think of it as the course’s fall tune‑up: a fresh coat of green, a new outfit, and a little extra TLC before peak season arrives. While individual courses close for their overseed window, you’ll still have places to play across Tucson City Golf. Our agronomy teams are gearing up for their busiest (and greenest) stretch of the year, all to make sure your winter golf is the best it can be.

We’re looking for a few new members to join our Greens Committee as we head into the fall season. The committee plays an important role in supporting course conditions, sharing golfer feedback, and helping guide long‑term improvements across Tucson City Golf.

Spotlight on Hole 6 at Randolph North

A new tee box is taking shape on Hole 6 at Randolph North, where our agronomy team has been leveling, resurfacing, and smoothing the surface to improve firmness, consistency, and overall playability. What used to be a bumpy start is becoming a clean, elevated tee that’s nearly ready for golfers!

August is also when the desert starts to give a little back, and recent monsoon rains have helped stabilize moisture levels. Some areas are showing improved density and recovery, while others are still working through the tougher parts of the summer transition. As temperatures ease and growth patterns begin to level out, our agronomy teams are fine‑tuning daily maintenance to support consistency and keep conditions moving in the right direction through the rest of the season.

The Tucson Golf Program is Tucson City Golf’s player development hub. Our PGA of America Professionals help golfers of all ages learn the game, build confidence, and strengthen fundamentals. This August brings new sessions, returning leagues, and junior programming kicking into gear across our courses. Registration is open for our PGA Jr. League until August 2nd! This league is a fun, team-based program for ages 4–17.  This session #6 runs August 10 through September 7. Your junior golfer will learn the game, build confidence and sportsmanship, and compete in friendly matches under the guidance of our PGA Professional coaching staff. TGP Elite is our advanced junior training program for players preparing for tournament golf, high school competition, or long‑term development. TGP Elite requires a minimum 3‑month commitment, giving juniors the structured time they need to build skills, follow guided practice plans, and elevate their performance.

The Summer Turf Transition at Tucson City Golf

As Tucson’s temperatures rise, you might be noticing the summer turf transition taking shape across our Tucson City Golf courses. Once Tucson hits those 100‑plus days, ryegrass fades quickly, allowing the bermudagrass below to emerge. Let’s take a closer look at why this transition happens every year, and how it brings back the strong, vibrant bermudagrass that carries the course through the hottest stretch of the season. 

What Golfers Are Seeing on the Course

As a golfer, it’s easy to notice when the course looks different, especially when brown or straw-colored patches start showing up in fairways and surrounds. Our golf course agronomy team closely monitors these areas, and what you’re seeing is a normal part of the summer transition. These visual changes can feel surprising, but they’re actually signs that the bermudagrass underneath is beginning to take over. 
 
“The areas that are slower to come back during transition are areas we struggled with before we put seed down. We try to slowly eliminate the ryegrass to reduce the sudden appearance of distressed turf. Not all transitions are the same, and we do our best to remedy the areas,” said our Director of Agronomy, Tucson City Golf. 

It’s normal to see any of the following conditions during this stage of transition: 

  • Brown or straw-colored patches
  • Thin or weak areas in fairways and surrounds
  • Texture changes as ryegrass declines
  • Slight firmness or dryness in certain spots

How Rising Temperatures Affect the Turf

The turf responds quickly when Tucson’s temperatures push past 100 degrees, and humidity begins to rise. Imagine your car’s dashboard heating the second you park in the sun; it reacts immediately. The same thing happens on the course: the soil heats, ryegrass begins to lose strength, and the bermudagrass underneath wakes up and starts pushing through. These changes happen fast in our climate, showing how quickly the turf shifts once summer heat takes over.

Why The Summer Turf Transition Happens

The summer turf transition isn’t just a visual change; it’s a biological shift happening beneath your feet. As ryegrass softens in the summer heat, it’s easy to assume the bermudagrass underneath should immediately bounce back. The better the bermudagrass base before overseed, the easier it is for the bermudagrass to come back with proper practices. 

What Causes Bermudagrass Weakness?

Bermudagrass weakness occurs when winter ryegrass grows thick enough to limit the bermuda’s access to sunlight. During fall overseed, ryegrass often outcompetes the dormant bermuda beneath it, especially in high-traffic areas.  

By the time summer arrives, those shaded or crowded spots can lag behind as the rye fades. Picture the bermuda trying to wake up under a heavy blanket. It’s there, but it can’t fully push through until that layer starts to lift. 

As the season shifts, bermudagrass can start from a weaker position. This is especially true in areas with heavy foot and cart traffic. As the rye fades, bermudagrass recovery begins, filling in those thin spots and rebuilding strength for the rest of the season. 

What Our Agronomy Team Is Doing Right Now

As the summer transition unfolds, our golf course agronomy team is actively guiding the turf through this phase. Even though the transition happens fast, the maintenance behind the scenes is steady, intentional, and designed to support long-term recovery, which includes: 

  • Verticutting to thin out declining ryegrass and open space for bermudagrass 
  • Chemical applications to slow ryegrass growth and support smoother transition
  • Targeted fertilizer applications to boost bermudagrass growth and color
  • Irrigation adjustments to balance moisture with rising heat stress
  • Monitoring weak areas to track recovery and address slow-filling spots

When Will Conditions Improve?

As temperatures begin to level out later this month, the bermudagrass gains the stability it needs to strengthen and spread. On average, it takes about 4–6 weeks to fully recover. During that window, you’ll see thin areas begin to fill in, color even out, and overall texture become more consistent across fairways and surrounds. 

We focus on playability every day as the turf moves through recovery. Our golf course agronomy team actively shapes conditions, so Tucson City golfers can enjoy their round while the bermuda rebuilds. As temperatures stabilize, most courses begin showing noticeable improvement deeper into July, with steady progress continuing into early August as bermudagrass reaches full momentum. 

What Golfers Should Know

As a golfer, you can be assured that the visual changes on the course don’t reflect poor conditions. This summer transition is a routine part of the turf growth cycle, and our agronomy teams are actively managing each step to support recovery. As temperatures climb into triple digits, the ryegrass that carried the course through winter begins to decline, opening the door for warm‑season bermudagrass to take over. 

While bermudagrass strengthens, you may notice small shifts in color or texture, but playability remains our top priority. These improvements set the foundation for stronger conditions heading into fall. 

Final Thoughts from Our Agronomy Team

This normal process might look a little different from week to week, but it’s all part of bermudagrass recovery and how the turf rebuilds its strength for the months ahead. Our team is watching every phase closely and making adjustments to keep the course moving in the right direction.

Your Golf Improvement Fund Update

The Mayor and Council approved the Golf Improvement Fund, which officially begins today, July 1. This $2 fee is added per round on top of the greens fee and is dedicated solely to capital improvements across Tucson City Golf.

The fund allows us to invest in course upgrades, equipment, and projects that elevate the golfer experience. We’ll keep you updated as progress continues, and we’ll post new information regularly on our website. Visit the Golf Improvement Fund page 👉  tucsoncitygolf.com/golf-improvement-fund

Our June aeration was a success, and the greens are settling in as we move into peak summer. July brings natural changes in how bermudagrass looks and responds, but our teams are working daily to keep surfaces smooth, firm, and consistent. The good news? We’ve already had a few early monsoon rains, which give the turf a welcome boost. 

The Tucson Golf Program is Tucson City Golf’s player development hub. Our PGA of America Professionals help golfers of all ages learn the game, build confidence, and strengthen fundamentals. This month also brings a new way to connect with the Tucson Golf Program community. Coach Alex will lead a Sip N Chip clinic, a relaxed blend of short‑game practice and social time. Aeration season is here, and it’s one of the most important maintenance practices we do to keep our courses healthy and playing their best. 

Aeration clears harmful gases from the soil and improves air flow, which strengthens turf health and playability. It also relieves compaction, improves water movement, and supports stronger root systems — all essential for keeping greens smooth, firm, and consistent as Tucson heads into its hottest stretch. Because this work requires recovery time, each course will close briefly for one day during its scheduled date in June. 

As a thank‑you for your patience, golfers will receive a $5 discount on greens fees for one week following aeration at each course. The discount is applied at check‑in.

May is here, and it’s shaping up to be a great month on the course. Warmer days, longer evenings, and steady spring conditions make it an ideal time to get out on our courses and take in everything happening across Tucson City Golf.

At El Rio, you’ll notice a few fresh touches on the course this month. New tee markers are incoming, and the nines have been flipped back to their original layout, which is a change many longtime players will appreciate right away. 

Across all courses, our agronomy teams are dialing in conditions for the summer season. We’ve lowered mowing heights on fairways, tees, and surrounds to support the transition from winter ryegrass to warm‑season bermudagrass. As temperatures rise, you’ll see a gradual shift in color and texture as the bermudagrass takes over. Weekly fertilizer applications will help promote healthy growth and smoother playing surfaces as we move deeper into May. 

Golf Improvement Fund: Proposal & Open House

Following a vote during the Mayor and Council meeting on Tuesday, April 7, 2026, the City of Tucson has issued a notice of intent (NOI) for proposed rate and fee changes for the Parks and Recreation department, as required by Arizona Revised Statutes § 9-499.15. One of the proposed fee changes would affect golf. An open house will be held on Thursday, May 7, 4-6 p.m., at the Randolph Dell Urich Golf Course (Copper Room) for anyone who would like to discuss the proposed fee. 

Proposed to take effect July 1, 2026: $2 per round of golf on top of greens fee, to be used for capital improvements at Tucson City Golf courses.

Other public meetings for all proposed fees are being held throughout the city. You are encouraged to attend the public meetings and submit comments on the proposal using the online comment portal.   • PGA Summer Camps are a perfect introduction to golf for every young player. All camps follow the same six 3‑day sessions from June 3 through July 24, and families can choose between two age‑specific options. Half‑Day Camps for ages 9–17 (7:30–11:30 a.m.) offer a supportive, confidence‑building environment with a 1:4 coach‑to‑player ratio and dedicated on‑course play. First Swing Morning Camps for ages 5–9 (7:30–9:00 a.m.) provide age‑appropriate instruction, fun games, and a welcoming introduction to the sport. April Arrives and All Eyes Turn Toward Spring Golf

April is here, and while the world’s best prepare for their walk down Magnolia Lane, there’s plenty of excitement in Tucson. The Wildcats’ deep tournament run has the city buzzing, and our courses are ready for spring. Fairways are sharp, the weather is perfect, and it’s a great month to get out and play.

The Junior Golf Association of Arizona is holding a private event at El Rio and Silverbell on the weekend of Saturday, April 11– Sunday, April 12. Silverbell will be closed for the entire weekend, and El Rio will offer limited tee times until 9:30 a.m. each day.

The Tucson Golf Program is Tucson City Golf’s player‑development hub. Our PGA of America Professionals help golfers of all ages learn the game, sharpen their skills, and connect with the Tucson community. These programs help golfers build confidence and strengthen fundamentals.

April kicks off with PGA HOPE – Tucson’s spring graduation on Friday, April 3, featuring a 9‑hole scramble at Randolph North. Representatives from Mayor Regina Romero’s office and U.S. Representative Adelita Grijalva’s office will join to recognize the program’s impact. We’re proud to see the Tucson Golf Program celebrated for their hard work as they continue spreading the love of golf throughout our community.

Registration is open for the following:

  • Operation 36: This program offers group coaching with weekly instruction, on‑course play days, and progress tracking in the Operation 36 app. It helps golfers build skills and move through each milestone at their own pace. Registration ends April 12th.
  • PGA Summer Camp: These half-day camps run from June 3 to July 24 at Randolph Golf Complex for ages 9 to 17. They offer fun, skills‑based instruction in a supportive group setting, helping junior golfers learn the game and build confidence.

Our teams are beginning spring conditioning work across the courses, including vertical mowing and topdressing greens. These practices thin out the remaining winter grass and encourage healthy bermudagrass growth as temperatures rise. The sand topdressing that follows helps create a smoother, firmer surface. This work will continue periodically until overseed starts in the fall.

April brings great weather and even better post‑round moments. Stop by one of our course restaurants for happy hour and enjoy favorites like discounted beer on tap, pork taquitos, wings, Arizona cheese crisp, and tater tots. Each course has its own lineup. Spring is in Full Swing at Tucson City Golf

March is here, and a little luck never hurts on the course. While we can’t promise you’ll swing like Rory McIlroy this month, we can promise great weather, fresh fairways, and plenty happening across all five Tucson City Golf courses.

Registration for Tucson’s City Amateur Championship is open!

This year’s Tucson City Amateur runs April 17–19 with a three‑course rotation: El Rio on Friday, Randolph North on Saturday, and Dell Urich on Sunday. With a 120‑player field and spots already filling quickly, securing your place before the April 6 deadline is the smart play.

If you need to withdraw, cancellations made on or before April 10 receive a full refund. Cancellations from April 11–16 receive golf shop credit, and no refunds or credits are available after April 16.

PGA Jr. League
The 9U season is underway with 30 young golfers enjoying weekly practices and matches at Silverbell, Fred Enke, and Randolph. Now’s the perfect time to register for the 13U and 17U divisions, with the spring season running April 1–May 23. Give your junior golfer a fun, team-based experience and secure their spot today! 

PING Interclub
Teams from the Tucson Golf Program and First Tee are facing off in a five-event tournament series across all Tucson City Golf courses. Each 18-hole event helps players ages 12–17 sharpen their skills, compete as a team, and grow their confidence. Email Landyn at llewis@tucsoncitygolf.com to reserve your player’s spot.

PGA Hope Tucson
Discover the game with adaptive instruction designed for veterans and active-duty military at Randolph Golf Complex. The next session runs April 17–May 22, and registration opens March 18th. PGA REACH and the Southwest PGA Foundation fully fund the program, so veterans participate at no cost.

Our teams are lowering mowing heights across fairways and approaches to support the spring transition back to bermudagrass. You’ll notice firmer, faster conditions as the turf responds to warmer temperatures. 

We’re also shifting our divot‑mix. Seed is being phased out in the rough, and most divot bottles will move to a sand‑only mix. If you find seed mix in the bottles, it’s still fine to use them as we transition.

We’re also celebrating Oscar Mejia, Superintendent at Fred Enke Golf Course, who has accepted the role of Director of Agronomy at El Conquistador Golf Course in Oro Valley. We appreciate his contributions to Tucson City Golf and wish him continued success.

The Tucson Golf Program is gearing up for an exciting 2026 spring season with programs designed to grow the game and give back to the Tucson community. Registration is open for golfers interested in any of the following:

  • PGA HOPE Tucson begins February 27 at Randolph Golf Complex, providing adaptive golf instruction for veterans and active military members to support physical, mental, and social well-being.
  • Operation 36 sessions are underway. This program offers structured group coaching with weekly instruction, on-course Play Days, and progress tracking through the Operation 36 mobile app. This helps golfers develop skills and advance through measurable milestones.
